Shibi (Sanskrit: शिबि, romanized: Śibi) is a Hindu the king who appears in Hindu literature. He is said to be Ushinara who belonged to the Chandravamsha (Lunar dynasty's) son. King Shibii was well-known for his liberal principles and self-sacrifice. He is claimed to have rescued Agni (changed into a dove) from Indra (turned into a kite) by offering up his flesh in one of his stories.
Meet with Suhotra :
According to the Mahabharata, a Kuru the ruler named Suhotra once paid a visit to the great rishis. He got into Shibi on his way back. The two monarchs celebrated one other from their horses, but refused to yield to the other, believing themselves to be superior. After hearing about the standoff, the sage Narada approached the two monarchs and preached to both of them about the complicated rules of honesty and humility. He declared that, while Shibi was greater in virtue to Suhotra, both men were generous, and one must eventually yield to the other. Suhotra then praised Shibi's efforts and chose to give way to the latter.
Flesh offering :
The devas once decided to put Shibi's reputation to the test. Agni, hidden as a dove, sought safety on the lap of the king to avoid being tracked by a pursuing kite. The king's priest told him that it was his sworn responsibility to safeguard the dove's life, which led him to believe that it was a sage. Indra, hidden as a kite, got into the scene and asked Shibi to give him the dove that it had been chasing. Shibi refused to give up the dove that had come to him for help, countering that he would be willing to donate some other flesh in exchange. According to tradition, the kite (Indra) told King Shibi that the flesh he would require will be provided by the kite.
